Foster care Training

Open Your Heart and Home to Transform a Child’s Future

Becoming a foster parent offers a unique opportunity to make a profound impact on a child’s life. By welcoming a child who cannot stay with their parents, you provide more than just a safe place to live; you offer a sanctuary of love, stability, and hope. The journey of fostering is filled with moments of deep connection as you watch a child heal, grow, and flourish in the warmth of your home. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve played a part in helping a child regain their sense of security and trust while their birth family works towards healing.

For those ready to make an even greater commitment, becoming an adoptive parent means providing a child with a permanent, loving family — a "forever home" where they can truly belong.

Our Mission

At The Door of HOPE, our mission is to provide safe and nurturing homes for children in need. Our goal is to help foster children reach their full potential and prepare them for a bright future.

What is a Home Study

A home study is a comprehensive report on your family, home, and readiness to become a foster parent. An assessor compiles this report, which is needed for your licensure as a foster parent in Ohio.

Purpose of a Home Study

The home study helps determine which children would be the best fit for your family and assists in the placement process.

When Does the Home Study Begin?

The process starts when you submit your application to become a foster parent, which is provided during pre-service training. You can submit the application at any point during training.

How Long Does the Home Study Take?

By law, the home study must be completed within 180 days (6 months) of your training. If all documents and interviews are done promptly, it could take as little as 3-4 months.

What Does the Home Study Involve?

The home study involves gathering documents, answering questions, and undergoing interviews to provide a clear picture of your family life. It helps both the prospective family and the agency in the decision-making process.

Preparing For Your Home Study

To get ready, consider the following:

  • Set up a designated bedroom with a bed and dresser for the child.
  • If fostering infants or toddlers, have a car seat ready.
  • Create a care plan for when a foster child arrives, considering scenarios like a child being sick or needing transportation support.

Legal Concerns

If you have legal issues, such as past criminal history, contact your local assessor to check your eligibility to become a foster parent.
